The internet is an ever-evolving thing. It grows, changes, and expands all the time. And with this growth comes all new ways to experience the web. We’re now browsing our favourite websites on everything from mobile phones to e-readers, tablet PCs to laptops. And all from the comfort of our recliner sofa. That means that, unlike in the early days of the web, there are now lots of different screen sizes and resolutions used. For example, an iPad 2 has a screen resolution of 1024 x 768, whereas a great many desktop PCs with widescreen displays run a resolution of 1920 x 1080. These two are worlds apart in terms of screen real estate, so a website will naturally look different on each one. The problem arises when a website developer or user experience team want to develop a new feature, then realise that core functionality is hidden off screen on a smaller or larger screen. As an answer to these issues, a new area of web design has evolved – responsive web design. But is 2012 the year that it will really take off? Why Being Responsive is Important Back in the early 2000s when the web was first starting to find its place in our everyday lives, almost everyone used the same sort of screen. They were almost all 4:3 aspect ratio screens, and generally speaking they were in a resolution of 1024×768 or 1280×1080. This meant that almost all web designers would tailor their designs to these screens. And it worked well, because everyone was experiencing the site in the same way. Saw a rerun of Oprah’s interview with Jo Rowling, well-known first self-made billionaire female children’s book author, made famous and known by her initial J.K. Rowling. Looking back, she recalled that no publishers wanted to publish her book, twelve publishers turned her down. She also recalled that editors kept reminding her that children’s book won’t see big commercial success but she went on and kept writing. Then it was the thirteenth publisher, thirteen’s the charm, took them to the single most successful children’s book franchise in history of mankind, paving its way in becoming Hollywood’s most successful movie franchise of all time, as well. The budget for the total of eight Harry Potter movies in the franchise: $1,155,000,000. The box office for all eight movies in total reached $7,642,955,524. Seeing that Harry Potter books and movies franchise have come to a close. Rowling said it was like saying goodbye to a friend, it was hard, and one of the most heartfelt moment of one of the chapters of her life. Lin, a 25-year-old actress who has a music degree, put the performance together within five days for a blend of classical and Taiwanese pop music that has her tucking the violin under her chin and stretching out as needed to both piano and zither. “I think the toughest part is to play the piano and the zither simultaneously. We tried many times to figure out this position for my left hand to play the piano, and right hand to play the zither,” Lin said. “When I have to look at both the piano and the zither, I really wished my eyes could grow wider apart. If I have to play (them) together, I must play by feel.” Lin started to play the piano at age three. Our favorite comedian, Conan O’Brien, recently featured as Fast Company’s Most Creative People 2011 at position number 8.   Last year, the show that he has worked all his sweat off to finally host was “taken away” from him. He was forced to obey a termination contract, not hosting any TV shows for nine months. During that nine month, he roamed the social media world, twitting his unemployed days and made the news, went for a tour around the United States. Until finally the nine-month period was over and he went on air and cracked some jokes again on air through basic cable network with his own show, “CONAN”. Unwilling to wait until someone came to rescue his wife of 20 years from the waters of his flooded home town of Ishinomaki in northeast Japan, the 43-year-old grabbed the scuba gear. In a nation of careful dressers, Mr Akaiwa sports Rambo-style army pants, a blue sweatshirt, muddy sneakers, legs wrapped in plastic secured with orange duct tape and three backpacks, including an L.L. Bean bum bag with a tiny plastic anime character affixed, a doctor that saves people. He says he was at work a few kilometres away when the tsunami hit his coastal town of 162,000 and rushed back to find his neighbourhood inundated in up to 3m of water. If you have read my previous blog post: “Browser War for Market Share” several years ago. In the middle of the blog post, I’ve mentioned savethedevelopers.org website that offered JavaScript to be embedded in our code to detect the visitor’s browser. If they are using IE6, a banner will show up encouraging them “to save the developer (us) by upgrading their Internet Explorer or install other grade A browsers. The website (savethedevelopers.org) managed to survived quite some time but eventually got closed down (some said under pressure of Microsoft’s, the company responsible of Internet Explorer). Well, fast forward to now, Microsoft is doing the same thing all over again, this time, however, it’s official. Just visit: ie6countdown.com. They offered script to show a banner when IE6 is detected. They also show the statistics of IE6 users all over the world, the reason to move off IE6, and a call to educate others (especially your friends)! Yes, if you aware, this is none other than one of the marketing efforts to promote IE9 that is about to be released in the very near future. But I believe the goal is noble, let’s put IE6 to rest in peace forever please. . Mungkin kalau masih ingat, saya pernah menulis mengenai: Perang Browser beberapa tahun yang lalu. The search continues… I kept looking at visitors’ keywords and “gaming laptop” keep showing up every now and then. Clearly once they landed here, they were shown this post: http://sys-talk.com/computer/gaming-laptop/ It’s a bit out-dated now, since it was written in December 2008. So let me update my blog post for this year’s edition. An initial fair warning before reading on: you won’t find gaming laptop recommendations here, so if you’re looking for those please look elsewhere. If you are a hardcore gamer, hungry to swallow all those next-gen games with your future laptop and got money to burn, please stay awhile and read below. If you are a casual gamer, well this blog post is written especially for you. The Basics Okay, here goes… the basics are still the same as previous years. If you are interested in playing HD (hi-def) movies with blue-ray quality, playing next-gen games with medium graphical settings and more, look for dedicated mobile graphics (discrete GPU) on your laptop. Look for the nvidia or ATi logo stickers. That’s almost always guarantees that you are looking at a laptop with discrete GPU. Intel has their GMA offerings but I haven’t seen any review that recommends it for gaming (yet). Processors and memory (RAM) also come into play here, but not as significant as the GPU IMHO. So you should do some research on those mobile GPU numbers on the internet. Check out: guru3d.com, tomshardware.com and anandtech.com for reviews and benchmarks. But, if you are only into casual games then you needn’t concern about the GPU, as even the integrated graphics on most netbooks should be sufficient for you (without the 3D acceleration, of course). Tally, 49, found a backpack containing $3,300 cash and a laptop and returned it to the owner. Now reporters are calling the homeless outreach group that provides the former landscaper with nightly shelter and a part-time job. Rewards are pouring in. A woman from as far as Seattle called to express her admiration. “I’m just kind of overwhelmed,” Tally says. “It’s a good thing people out there care, I guess. I’m just not really a public person.” When he found the abandoned backpack at a light-rail station Nov. 1, he had just spent the last of his money on parts for his mountain bike. He opened the backpack and found the money. He says his mind was racing. “I don’t think anybody would not be tempted by that,” Tally says. Tally took the backpack to his boss, Sam Sumner, operations manager at Tempe Community Action Agency, which provides the city’s homeless with meals and shelter in area churches. Sumner identified the backpack’s owner from a résumé he found on a flash drive inside. Four days later, Arizona State University student Bryan Belanger had back the cash he needed to buy a car. I remember my old boss used to ask this a lot of times to different staffs: “what color is this pencil? Is this blue or green?” He was holding a blue pencil with his hands. Me and my colleagues look at each others and one of us answered: “Of course it’s blue, Sir.” Then, he said: “My mom always says yes, you might see this as blue, but what if there are more people that say this are green instead? Who will you follow? Who’s opinion will you consider most? Who’s right in this case?” His point was if you were the only one who said that the pencil is blue while many others said that it’s green then people may say that you are crazy. The man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approx. two thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After 3 minutes, a middle-aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule. 4 minutes later, the violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk. 6 minutes: a young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again. 10 minutes: a 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. It was all sprung out from the creative mind of J.K. Rowling and her road to success surely wasn’t easy. Meet J.K. As for Mr. O’Brien if you tuned in to your TV (cable here in Indonesia) during late night, I bet you already knew who he is. For non-fans, perhaps a little recap: Conan once got the dream job that every comedian has been dreaming of: hosting “The Tonight Show”. He did secure a deal to replace Jay Leno on “The Tonight Show”, leaving his old gig “The Late Night Show” behind in the hands of Jimmy Fallon in early 2009. However in early 2010, after “The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien” aired for just a mere seven months, the network decided to change the airing time and make Mr. Leno’s show back to the original time slot. Conan refused and publicly stated he would quit the show if his show was moved to the next day. Even his fans became angry and thought that it was so unfair. After weeks of disputes and negotiations, the network and Conan finally agreed on a settlement: the network made him agree to leave the show and that he could only freely return on-air as early as nine months later. Well, fear no more, this task is like taking a trip to the local park. You don’t have to personally visit the author’s website and download the applications one by one. For example if you need web browsers like Firefox and Opera, IM Yahoo Messenger, Music player WinAmp, and OpenOffice for your PC. You can use “Ninite” to do the task. All you have to do is visit ninite’s website at www.ninite.com and choose which applications that you want to include to your ninite installer. And then what you need to do next is run the ninite installer on the designated PC. That’s it. Quite simple, eh? To prevent redownloading the same application components over and over again when you’re using ninite to install several PCs, you can use this small config file. For those of you who are not familiar with Twitter, it is a social networking site where users can post a 140-character long of sentences, to express and announce anything from the party they’re gonna attend or about the movie that they just watched, pretty much like your facebook.com‘s status updates or the karma-driven plurk entries at plurk.com. Twitter is currently down for unplanned maintenance *doh*? Most sites show a relatively boring and annoying “not found” and “site currently down” page to their users during down time or when their user stumble upon a broken link. Twitter, however, chose to express empathy to their users during down time. Biz Stone, a Twitter founder, chose an illustration, that best illustrates the teamwork at Twitter working to resolve the problem, on iStockPhoto a while back. The image is an image of a flock of birds (associated with the Twitter bird) are lifting a smiling whale from the ocean. The effect was found so effective and so touching. I notice you have been looking into way of keeping your favorite YouTube videos on your beloved hard disk in order to play them again in the future. Actually there is plethora of solutions to choose from, but up to now here is the most straight-forward method available. A temporary file with all the content of the FLV (Flash Video) file is created in the temporary folder of Windows, usually located under [User Profile]Local SettingsTemp. In order to view this file, go to your temp folder while playing a video in YouTube or in other similar Flash video Web site, and click the ‘Date Modified’ column to sort the files list by date. Then you will find that the first filename begins with ‘FLA’ prefix and the file size is gradually growing while streaming (F5 to refresh). This ‘fla???.tmp’ file is in fact a full .FLV file that can be played with any video software that support FLV files. However, this file is locked by the flash player component and you cannot copy or open it. Also, when you close the web browser, the file is automatically deleted. In order to do just that, we need to unlock the file. Very disappointing! Look at this commentary a local newspaper in Indonesia just printed. “I urge the people not to misuse the fire-dispatcher phone number for pranks. It is very time consuming. Once arrived at the fire location, the fire had already gone wild and big, and would took longer time to handle it,” Vice Mayor of the City of Bandung, Ayi Vivananda. Too many government officials can only “URGE” the people to do something. You can find the official news HERE (in Bahasa Indonesia). The printed version of the paper got more details on why those prank phone calls can disturb the performance of the fire-fighter in reaching the “real” or “correct” fire location. These pranks elevate the response time of the fire fighter and minimize the chance of the officials in saving other people’s lives. Normally as government officials “with the power” to do some real good, they don’t need to URGE people to stop these prank calls, especially when it comes down in saving other people’s lives. They should’ve made the right and much-needed REGULATIONS and even clear-cut LAW to govern this and punish all those irresponsible people, risking and endangering other people’s lives. They should’ve seen our neighbouring countries, when it comes to saving lives and all, give a STERN WARNING in advanced, even punishable by LAW. “DO NOT PRESS THE BUTTON, EXCEPT IN THE CASE OF AN EMERGENCY. Today is the National Commemoration of “Ibu Kita Kartini” in Indonesia. She was the mother of Indonesia’s very own women’s right movement for equal rights in education. Thanks to her and several others, women in Indonesia now can study and work just like the men do, and even outperform the men in some areas. Okay, back to the topic, which I personally think is still related to the “equal rights” topic today, let’s discuss about Ms. Susan Boyle. Several days back, if you watched “Britain’s Got Talent“ show or simply just watched the viral videoclip of “Susan Boyle” on Youtube. You’ll be amazed by how skeptical people are when they see a person, which is “in their own perception”, is below their standards in appearance. You can even clearly see some people rolled their eyes when they first saw Ms. Boyle on stage. But… when she started singing, their perception drastically changed. If you haven’t seen this movie, you should notice that this movie will “steal” almost three hours of your life. IMHO, it would be a three-hour of your life well-spent on such a wonderful movie. After watching this movie, I believe some of you will treasure and appreciate your time and your life even more. The movie starts with a scene where a dying old woman is lying on a hospital bed. She tells her daughter of a story of a blind clockmaker whom made a clock for the city hall (or perhaps the train-station? I’m not sure where the clock was erected) that rotate backwards (counter-clockwise). You should pay attention to this litte prologue, because you will see this very same clock again in the movie, near the end. Then the old woman makes a request to her daughter to read a diary for her. Unbeknown by her daughter, this diary turned out to be the life journal of someone very dear to her. Okay, I don’t want to spoil the story for those of you who haven’t seen it yet. Those of you who don’t mind spoilers, just go ahead and “read more”. Some might say that the first part of the movie was rather slow and boring, but hell no, it was the most wonderful part of the story. You will see the true nature of people. Some are afraid of the unknown. Some view the unknown as a miracle, a gift from God. A child was born somewhat prematurely, and he was born with the appearance of an old man despite of his age. The mother died when giving birth. His father was sad and panicked when he saw the baby had a face of an elderly man. Despite his wife’s dying wish, he gave away [...]

Good question. How much does it “really” worth to you? A glass of water in your everyday life? Cheap, right? How about: a glass of water when you are lost in the desert? Priceless… Today, my friend has shown me a website that “calculate” how much your domain worth. Okay, the site shown that some of the sites are worth thousands of dollars. Hmmm, sounds lucrative, right? But… will someone actually buy it? It might bring tremendous joy to you when you see that your site you’ve been building for months has been valued by this “domain-valuation” site to a staggering amount of thousands of dollars. But still, will anyone buy your site at that value? Several days ago, I read an editorial by Stanley Bing on BNET that discuss a somewhat similar question and I found it interesting… Here’s an excerpt of what Stanley Bing has said: You’re worth what they want to pay you. A few years ago, I “invested” in an old copy of Iron Man comics, one from the ’60s. It was in Very Good condition, and had a story line I liked. It was listed in the Comic Bible for about $40, but I got it for $25. Calling your relatives in China to demand “Spring Festival Money Gift” (压岁钱) (also known as 红包 “Angpao” among Chinese living in Indonesia)… IMHO, it is inappropriate for you to phone a relative to demand it. “Yashuiqian”, the real Angpao The so-called “Angpao”, according to our tradition, is given from a married couple to a child, whom is usually of younger age. The original name for “angpao” in traditional Chinese is “Yashuiqian”, which literally translated as “Money to keep you stay young”. Usually given from older generation to the younger generation, to keep them stay young and have a long life. So… is it polite for a younger person to call and ask for “angpao” to his/her elder? Of course NOT. So… marketer, designer, or advertiser, or whomever, please do some research first before printing those BIG BANNER and place them on the streets. =) It will save you from the embarrassment. “Happy Chinese New Year!” “Gong Xi Fa Cai!” 恭喜发财!  Iklan Three: Nelpon ke China minta Angpao? The web-browser market has experienced a lot lately. Nearly a decade ago, the two dominant players of the time were Netscape Navigator (the reigning champ) and MS Internet Explorer (the contender). You might have witnessed the “Browser War” between Netscape and Internet Explorer (IE), which eventually won by IE. Designer’s point of view Personally, as a web designer, I have to constantly review these changes to cater to my target audience’s needs and visiting exper ience by designing websites that will “look and feel” similar when viewed using different browsers. Some call this “cross-browser / multi-browser compatibility”. You have to make sure that the site you designed will not break in that particular browser. One of the resource that you might want to go is the browser statistics, like: http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp IE is losing grounds From the statistics, you can see that Firefox is gaining market share consistently year by year. With the addition of Google Chrome in late 2008, the browser market share is once again a fiery battleground. IE has been losing its market share chunk-by-chunk to the competitors. Why? Perhaps, primarily because the competitors offer “innovative” additions to the browsing experience. Tabbed browsing made famous by Opera, even way back in the times of IE 5. Usable and customizable add-on / plug-ins for Firefox that extends the browser functionality to greater extends. The Quest for a Gaming Laptop…   Several weeks ago, my friend asked me to recommend a good gaming laptop, that will be able to run modern next-gen 3d games. Most games now require shader 3.0 enabled GPU (graphics processing unit) as a minimum. So, it’s undeniable that one of the most important factor is of course the GPU. Next, your CPU (central processing unit), your memory (random access memory a.k.a RAM), and Hard drive (hard disk drive a.k.a HDD). Graphics Make sure you go with a dedicated GPU, instead of integrated ones (like Intel GMA solutions). I’m not saying that Intel GMA (Graphics Media Accelerator) can’t perform well, they are good with graphics for productivity applications, but when it comes to gaming, it will hurt your heart out. I’ve played “Titan Quest” on Intel GMA X3100 laptop, and *ouch* the frame rate gave me a headache. Apple’s recent “upgrade” in their MacBook line, by switching from Intel GMA to nVidia’s GeForce 9X00M GPU, is a testament to my last statement. One biggest disadvantage of laptop’s GPU is that you can’t simply upgrade it like their CPU counterparts. You can’t just unplug your GPU like you unplug your PCI-Express or AGP (accelerated graphics port) graphics card off your desktop PC motherboard. That’s why it is very important to choose the right dedicated graphics from the start. nVidia and ATi are the best dedicated graphics provider at the moment, and they have produced graphics solution for laptops. ATi’s Mobility Radeon, nVidia’s GeForce Go are most well-known. I own a ATi X700 Mobility Radeon laptop and got nVidia GeForce 8600GT on my desktop PC, so that makes me neutral to both camps. Okay, here goes, the first post on this blog… I am a management graduate, so it’s logical if I chose “Management” as my first topic. Management as an Art? What is art? art (n) (http://definr.com/art) 1: the products of human creativity; works of art collectively; 2: the creation of beautiful or significant things; 3: a superior skill that you can learn by study and practice and observation. The strong keywords that I’m getting from the definition above are: human creativity, superior skill, learn by study and practice and observation. “Experience taught me a few things. One is to listen to your gut, no matter how good something sounds on paper. The second is that you’re generally better off sticking with what you know. I’m not saying that there’s no justifiable scientific method to come up with the solution to the problem. It’s just sometimes the variables are too many and too unpredictable that it requires the “art” from which comes from your skill learned from you studies, experience (your practices and observations). Yes, you might have studied several business cases when studying for your MBA. Yes, you might have experienced some business cases of your own at work.
